MULTIPLEXE is taking over the Espace Vanhomwegen<\/a> for a long-term performance, conceived as an exhibition in the making. Nothing here is set in stone: the institution unfolds in public, laying bare its own conditions of production and turning every movement into a visible act. The exhibition becomes a continuous, evolving process, in which decisions, creations and interactions together form a collective choreography, carried out by actors from the Brussels cultural scene. Come and discover the many transformations during the 11 openings scheduled throughout the exhibition!<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n


MULTIPLEXE is a small-scale exhibition space. It was designed and built by the artists Benjamin De Backer and Diego Thielemans between 2018 and 2021. Since then, it has functioned both as a figurative sculpture representing an art institution and as an actual exhibition space showcasing artists\u2019 works. The compact size of the exhibition rooms invites us to rethink the various relationships that define a work of art: its relationship to the public, to the building, to external conditions, to the production process and to temporality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In its installation in Espace Vanhomwegen<\/a>, the space around MULTIPLEXE is structured like a veritable institutional machinery. The exhibition unfolds across an exhibition hall, a storage area, a workbench, a stock of materials, a list of names, as well as essential functions (kitchen, toilets, courtyard, entrance door) integrated into the installation. A make-up table completes this ensemble, brought into use during the performative moments that are the daily vernissages. These elements are not decorative: they constitute the visible organs of a functioning institution.
MULTIPLEXE\u2019s activation relies on multidisciplinary teams working in shifts. They carry out all the necessary tasks: production of the artworks, scenography, communication, maintenance and reception.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Every action is both functional and performative, designed to be understood by both other team members and the public. Each day begins with a meeting to set out the areas of focus and allocate tasks. At midday, a communal meal interrupts the work. At the end of the day, preparations for the openings give rise to new forms of staging. Even during these opening events, the work continues, adapting to the demands of hospitality, mediation and conviviality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This working process is central: it is the very essence of the project. The institutional machinery is constantly being constructed, activated and transformed. It invites others to take part, to experiment, to reflect and to create. By highlighting its own limitations and those of the system it questions, MULTIPLEXE seeks to formulate a situated, concrete and critical proposal.  By re-enacting the stages of exhibition production\u2014design, production, communication, and hosting\u2014the project questions Brussels\u2019 institutional cultural offering. It highlights its shortcomings and attempts to address them in a concrete way. Whereas certain institutions rely on cumbersome, opaque and highly hierarchical structures, MULTIPLEXE offers a modest, transparent and collective alternative.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The framework adopted is deliberately offbeat, at times clownish, yet imbued with a sense of drama. This shift allows us to highlight problematic areas whilst opening up joyful possibilities. By exaggerating certain institutional codes, the project makes them visible and, in doing so, transformable. The project thus tackles several tensions: the issue of resources, the star system, the opacity of operations, but also the institutional architecture as a social and cultural filter. In response, MULTIPLEXE is a collective intelligence, reducing costs without compromising standards, and proposing a model where artistic production is shared, accessible and open. Against the current backdrop of a cultural crisis in Belgium, marked by economic tensions, issues of access and a re-evaluation of institutional models, MULTIPLEXE positions itself as a space for experimentation. It is not merely a matter of criticism, but of producing an alternative\u2014however fragile it may be\u2014capable of opening up new ways of institutionalising.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

MULTIPLEXE est un espace d\u2019exposition de petite dimension. Il a \u00e9t\u00e9 con\u00e7u et construit par les artistes Benjamin De Backer et Diego Thielemans entre 2018 et 2021. Depuis lors, il fait office \u00e0 la fois de sculpture figurative repr\u00e9sentant une institution artistique et d\u2019espace d\u2019exposition \u00e0 part enti\u00e8re pr\u00e9sentant les \u0153uvres d\u2019artistes. La taille r\u00e9duite des salles d\u2019exposition nous invite \u00e0 repenser les diff\u00e9rentes relations qui d\u00e9finissent une \u0153uvre d\u2019art : sa relation au public, au b\u00e2timent, aux conditions ext\u00e9rieures, au processus de production et \u00e0 la temporalit\u00e9.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pour son installation \u00e0 l\u2019Espace Vanhomwegen<\/a>, l\u2019espace autour MULTIPLEXE a \u00e9t\u00e9 structur\u00e9 comme une v\u00e9ritable machinerie institutionnelle. L\u2019exposition se d\u00e9ploie en une salle d\u2019exposition, un espace de stockage, une table de travail, un stock de mat\u00e9riaux, un tableau des noms, ainsi que des fonctions essentielles (cuisine, toilettes, cour, porte d\u2019entr\u00e9e) int\u00e9gr\u00e9es au dispositif. Une table de maquillage vient compl\u00e9ter cet ensemble, activ\u00e9e lors des moments de repr\u00e9sentation que sont les vernissages r\u00e9p\u00e9t\u00e9s quotidiennement. Ces \u00e9l\u00e9ments ne sont pas d\u00e9coratifs : ils constituent les organes visibles d\u2019une institution en fonctionnement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

L\u2019activation de MULTIPLEXE repose sur des \u00e9quipes multidisciplinaires qui se relaient. Elles assurent l\u2019ensemble des t\u00e2ches n\u00e9cessaires : production des \u0153uvres, sc\u00e9nographie, communication, entretien, accueil. Chaque geste est \u00e0 la fois fonctionnel et performatif, pens\u00e9 pour \u00eatre compris par les autres membres de l\u2019\u00e9quipe comme par le public. Chaque journ\u00e9e d\u00e9bute par une assembl\u00e9e qui d\u00e9finit les axes de travail et r\u00e9partit les t\u00e2ches. \u00c0 midi, un repas commun suspend l\u2019activit\u00e9. En fin de journ\u00e9e, la pr\u00e9paration des vernissages active de nouvelles formes de mise en sc\u00e8ne. M\u00eame lors de ces moments d\u2019ouverture, le travail continue, s\u2019adaptant aux exigences d\u2019accueil, de m\u00e9diation et de convivialit\u00e9.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cette mise au travail est centrale : elle est la mati\u00e8re m\u00eame du projet. La machine institutionnelle est construite, activ\u00e9e, transform\u00e9e en continu. Elle invite d\u2019autres \u00e0 y prendre part, \u00e0 exp\u00e9rimenter, \u00e0 r\u00e9fl\u00e9chir et \u00e0 produire. En rendant visibles ses propres limites et celles du syst\u00e8me qu\u2019elle interroge, MULTIPLEXE tente de formuler une proposition situ\u00e9e, concr\u00e8te et critique.  En rejouant les \u00e9tapes de production d\u2019une exposition, conception, fabrication, communication, accueil, le projet interroge l\u2019offre institutionnelle culturelle bruxelloise. Il met en lumi\u00e8re ses lacunes et tente d\u2019y r\u00e9pondre concr\u00e8tement. L\u00e0 o\u00f9 certaines institutions reposent sur des structures lourdes, opaques et tr\u00e8s hi\u00e9rarchis\u00e9es, MULTIPLEXE propose une alternative modeste, transparente et collective.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Le cadre adopt\u00e9 est volontairement d\u00e9cal\u00e9, parfois clownesque, travers\u00e9 par une forme de drama. Ce d\u00e9placement permet de pointer des zones probl\u00e9matiques tout en ouvrant des possibilit\u00e9s joyeuses. En exag\u00e9rant certains codes institutionnels, le projet les rend perceptibles et, ce faisant, transformables. Le projet s\u2019attaque ainsi \u00e0 plusieurs tensions : la question des moyens, le star system, l\u2019opacit\u00e9 des fonctionnements, mais aussi l\u2019architecture institutionnelle comme filtre social et culturel. En r\u00e9ponse, MULTIPLEXE est une intelligence collective, r\u00e9duit les co\u00fbts sans amoindrir l\u2019exigence, et propose un mod\u00e8le o\u00f9 la production artistique est partag\u00e9e, lisible et ouverte. Dans le contexte actuel de crise culturelle en Belgique, marqu\u00e9 par des tensions \u00e9conomiques, des enjeux d\u2019acc\u00e8s et une remise en question des mod\u00e8les institutionnels, MULTIPLEXE se positionne comme un espace d\u2019exp\u00e9rimentation. Il ne s\u2019agit pas seulement de critiquer, mais de produire une alternative, aussi fragile soit-elle, capable d\u2019ouvrir d\u2019autres mani\u00e8res de faire institution.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
